Scottish Prime Minister and Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Hamza Yusuf resigned. Yusuf was preparing to resign on the grounds that he would not receive sufficient support from the vote of confidence that was expected to be held this week.
Rumors that the Prime Minister would resign started last week with the termination of the power-sharing agreement between the SNP and the Scottish Green Party, the alliance party.
Hamza Yusuf, who became the prime minister of the regional government with the election held in Scotland, said on his social media account on the first day of his duty: “My family and I are spending our first night at Bute House after the vote in the parliament. “It’s a special moment when I lead my family in prayer, as is customary, after iftar together,” he shared.
WHO IS HAMZA YUSUF?
Former Scottish Minister of Health Hamza Yusuf had also served as minister of justice and minister of transport in the autonomous administration since 2012. Hamza Yusuf’s father is of Pakistani origin and immigrated to Scotland in the 1960s. Her mother was born in Kenya to a South Asian family.
Yusuf applied for the position, saying that serving as the Prime Minister of the Scottish Autonomous Administration would be the greatest privilege and honor of his life. Yusuf explained his election as Prime Minister with the words, “This is beyond my family’s wildest dreams.” Yusuf, who argued that Scotland needed independence more than ever, took office by saying that he would convince those who opposed secession from the United Kingdom to independence.
