Violence against women in Australia is a national crisis. This is what the country’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says after demonstrations drew thousands of people around the country over the weekend.
The protesters wanted to draw attention to the fact that 27 women have been murdered so far this year in what is described as gender-based violence.
Albanese takes the demonstrations as a call to the government to act, both nationally, in the states and at the local level.
– It is clear that we must do more. Merely feeling pity is not enough. That on average one woman dies every four days as a result of violence from a partner is to be described as a national crisis, says Prime Minister Albanese to Nine Network television.
In total, protests were held in 17 locations around the country on Sunday, in Melbourne an estimated 15,000 people participated.
