World Bank bond issue to save South Africas rhinos

Appealing to investors to save the black rhinos is the idea of the World Bank which will issue, on March 31, a loan of 150 million dollars in “Rhino Bonds”. Investors who buy these bonds will only be paid if the targets for the growth of the population of black rhinos in southern Africa are achieved.

After the ” blue bonds “, to finance the protection of the oceans, the World Bank launches a bond issue of 150 million dollars of “ rhino leaps “. Investors who purchase these securities will not receive interest during the life of the bond. Proceeds will be donated to two nature reserves in South Africa that have a mission to protect black rhinos. They will be used in particular to buy surveillance drones against poachers.

These animals are, in fact, slaughtered for their horns which are highly prized in Asia for their alleged aphrodisiac virtues. Today there are nearly 5,000 black rhinos. 50 years ago, there were 65,000 in the world.

And if the population of black rhinos in these two reserves increases by 4% per year, investors will be able to share a bonus of nearly 14 million dollars when the titles expire in 5 years.
