Earlier this week, Polish President Andrzej Duda came out and said that the country is ready to store NATO nuclear weapons on its territory, in an interview with the Polish newspaper Fakt. The statement came after a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, where Duda discussed the war in Ukraine, with President Joe Biden, among others.
– Poland borders both the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Russia’s ally Belarus. If NATO wants to deploy nuclear weapons on NATO’s eastern flank in response to Russia’s rearmament in the area, Poland is ready, Duda said.
According to Duda, nuclear cooperation between Poland and the United States has been discussed for a long time.
Warns Poland
The statements of Andrzej Duda from have caused Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov to react.
– All politicians who discuss such alternatives inside and outside Poland’s borders should understand that it will not increase security in the country, Ryabkov tells Tass.
He further says that if NATO deploys nuclear weapons in Poland, it would pose a threat to Russia’s security, which would put them at the forefront of Russia’s military plans.
– All relevant facilities will inevitably become a target, says Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
