Everton won soccer in the English Premier League with Liverpool’s goals 2–0. With their two consecutive wins, Everton have moved eight points up from the relegation battle.
Liverpool FC’s Premier League title dreams suffered a serious blow on Wednesday night when they suffered a 0-2 defeat to local rivals Everton. For Everton, the win was important as it lifted the club eight points above the relegation zone.
Jarrad Branthwaite scored the home team’s 1–0 lead in the 27th minute, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin the header made the final score 2–0 at just under an hour.
For Everton, a win over Liverpool is a rare treat, as it was only their second derby win in the last 27 matches.
Liverpool is second in the Premier League, three points away from league leader Arsenal. Manchester City is third, just one point behind Liverpool. City have played two games less than Arsenal and Liverpool. Liverpool and Arsenal will therefore play four more matches and Manchester City six.
Jurgen Klopp’s a second title as Liverpool manager now seems quite unlikely. The successful coach will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
– I can only apologize to our supporters today. We should have played better and because we didn’t, we lost,” Klopp said, according to the AP news agency.
Klopp said last week that Liverpool will need perfection to win the title. However, the team has lost two of its last three matches.
– I’m very disappointed. We let the match go exactly as Everton had hoped, Klopp said.
Manchester City will have a chance to overtake Liverpool on Thursday when they face Brighton away.
Everton is sixteenth in the league, meaning four clubs are behind it: Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United. Three are relegated to a lower league level in the Championship.
