The new SF film on Netflix is being torn apart by critics – said to have recycled a bad idea

The new SF film “Rebel Moon 2 – The Scar Maker” was clearly intended and advertised by Netflix as a blockbuster, after all they had hired a renowned action director in Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Justice League). But the film fails critics – one scene is particularly harshly criticized. Snyder is said to have reused the idea for this scene from a DC film he had in mind.

What kind of movie is Rebel Moon 2?

  • Rebel Moon tells the story of “The Magnificent Seven” in a science fiction version. The “Magnificent Seven” is just the western version of a samurai film.
  • A band of extraordinary fighters must protect a small village from an overwhelming enemy, from the “Mother World”, a faceless fascist space regime that equips its assassins with flaming lightsabers because… because… it looks good and you already like it anyway Empire from Star Wars looks like, you can go all the way with it.
  • In part 1 of Rebel Moon the underlying conflict was introduced and the heroes were gradually collected. In part 2 there is now the big battle for the village that was missing in part 1.

Director incorporated idea for “Justice League 2” into Rebel Moon 2

And the critics don’t like that? No, they don’t like that at all. On Rotten Tomatoes the film only has 52% positive reviews, on IMDB the film has a rating of 5.2 out of 10. On Metacritic it has a disastrous 36%. In any case, it remains far below expectations.

Director Zack Snyder is now giving new food to the critics because he spoke about there being borrowings from “Justice League 2” in the film. This is a film he planned in the DC superhero universe that didn’t come to fruition:

There’s definitely a Last Supper in Justice League 2, with a scene where the heroes have to tell the story of how they ended up there […] and, yes, the scene in Rebel Moon has a similar structure to the one we were considering for Justice League 2. There are a few other ideas we incorporated into Rebel Moon, but not enough to make Justice League 2 impossible.

Clunky scene follows up the heroes’ origin story

What is the problem? The scene that Snyder is referring to provides the origin story of each hero in Rebel Moon 2: In a few sentences and in chunky flashbacks, each character presents what so traumatized him. One has lost all his troops, another has had his kingdom stolen, a heroine has been betrayed by the evil empire.

It is criticized that the heroes’ stories are only quickly summarized in the scene and there is no possibility of building a connection with them. The fact that all the traumatic events are recounted one after the other takes away the impact of the individual fates.

The promised “Snyder Cut” doesn’t make the film any better

Is there any further criticism? The German YouTuber David Hain also criticizes Snyder for his promise to deliver a “director’s cut” that is supposed to be much larger and more brutal than the film and that will supposedly revolutionize “SF cinema” (via YouTube).

If you are presented with such monster cuts, who would still want to watch the normal film, asks Hain.

The “Magnificent Seven” formula screwed up

How does MeinMMO see this? I’ve already seen Rebel Moon 2 and the film actually doesn’t have a single twist or original idea. Part 1 at least had the classic traitor scene, but part 2 runs like a string.

The “Magnificent Seven” formula only works if you, as a viewer, find the characters interesting or at least understand them and there is a charismatic villain with nasty accomplices who, one after the other, commit as spectacular a crime as possible. In “Rebel Moon” the energy was put more into the fight scenes and world building, which is hardly used efficiently, instead of into the urgently needed characterization of the characters.

The characters seem more like superheroes who are only defined by a gimmick than like characters in a feature film.

Zack Snyder probably shouldn’t have used Justice League in particular: Justice League is considered a failed film and lost a lot of money. There has not yet been a second part.

Rebel Moon, where so many more parts are said to be coming, could now come to a quick end.

At least Zack Snyder had fun:
