The English football championship has once again been hit by an extra-sporting affair.
As reported by The Sun newspaper on Tuesday April 23, two players from the English Premier League were arrested on suspicion of rape. For the moment, the English daily is not revealing much other information. It only indicates that one of the two, aged 19, was questioned on suspicion of assault and complicity in rape in front of his club’s stadium, before being arrested, spending the night in a cell and be released on bail.
The second person accused, his teammate, also aged 19, was reportedly arrested and questioned the next day, also on suspicion of rape, and he was also released on bail. The alleged rape took place during the night from Friday to Saturday and the victim officially filed a complaint in the following hours.
This affair once again recalls the extra-sporting affairs which affect football and in particular the Premier League. A little over a year ago, Premier League player Mason Greenwood was arrested after photos and videos were posted on social media showing a young woman with a bloody face and bruises on her body. The 21-year-old footballer, “who was arrested and prosecuted as part of an investigation opened in January 2022,” is, however, no longer the subject of criminal proceedings after the removal of key witnesses and new elements”.
