ToPo who won the historic championship ended the Peli Bears dynasty

The Torpa Boys’ women’s basketball team, which had previously won the Finnish Cup, crowned its amazing season with the Finnish championship. PeKa, who took the five previous SM golds, had no chance in the one-sided final series.

The regular season winner Torpan Pojat became a double winner this season after defeating Peli-Karhut from Kotka 92–85 (44–33) in the third women’s basketball final at Kisahalli.

The first women’s championship in the club’s history was won by ToPo directly with a 3–0 victory. ToPo won the three finals with quite a bit of dominance, as they took the first final with 46 points, the second with 20 and the third with seven.

– I still don’t want to believe this. This is a really big deal for the team and the whole club. Five years ago, the project started and now we get to enjoy it, rejoiced ToPo’s coach Niko Kuusi.

Peli-Karhut played steadily in the finals, but the difference in level was too big between the teams. Torpan Pojat won all six of the season’s matches against PeKa.

– After all the difficulties, this silver was a medal won for PeKa. ToPo was a very well-coached team and deserved their championship, the coach of the Eagles Mika Haakana confessed.

In the decisive final, ToPo led from start to finish and finally made the decisive difference right in the opening period 25-14. After that, PeKa was able to keep pace with corinth production.

Hero player Taru Tuukkanen sealed his triple-double early in the final period when he dunked in close for a 71-63 lead. In total, the two-time Finnish champion collected 13/13/14s.

Peli-Karhut got the closest to within four points six and a half minutes before the end, but ToPo made important three-pointers throughout the match Sea of heather scored a 76–69 basket for the home team after overtime, which freed the home team from the momentary torment.

On Tuesday, in addition to Tuukkanen, Kanerva 24/3/5s, Carmen Tyson-Thomas 26/6 and IImar’I Thomas 21/8. Randi Brown scored 24 points for PeKa and Da’nasia Hood 17

18 years ago, the previous women’s championship in Helsinki

The last time the women’s Finnish basketball championship went outside of Kotka was in the 2016–17 season, when it was Hyvinkään Ponteva. Tuukkanen, who played a great season and final series in ToPo, also played a big role seven years ago when Ponteva celebrated the SM gold.

The Helsinki club had won the Finnish women’s basketball championship before this, last in the 2005–06 season, when the Panthers celebrated the basketball trophy. On Tuesday, Torpa Boys became the eighth team from Helsinki to win championship gold in women’s basketball.

In last year’s finals, ToPo bowed out to Peli-Karhui, who had won the previous five championships, with a 0–3 victory. The hunger for revenge that had been smouldering since last spring also fueled the people of Helsinki in the final matches.

The finished season has been a strong dominance of Torpa Boys’ women’s team. The bronze team Kouvottaret was the only team to beat ToPo this season. It was successful once in the regular season and once in the semifinals. ToPo won no fewer than 35 of the 37 matches they played.

In the 2013–2014 season, Catz from Lappeenranta became the women’s champion with only one loss. When Peli-Karhut celebrated the SM gold in the 2020–2021 season, the team also lost two matches during the entire season.
