Those responsible at Atlus have released a new trailer with a release date and a 25-minute gameplay showcase for Metaphor: ReFantazio. The new role-playing game from the makers of Persona 5 looks so fantastic that our MMORPG expert is cheating on his favorite genre.
What do I need to know about Metaphor: ReFantazio? The new role-playing game from Atlus will be released on October 11, 2024 for PC, Xbox Series and PlayStation. The development team includes three veterans of the popular Persona role-playing game series: director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima and composer Shoji Meguro.
In both playful and audiovisual terms, Metaphor: ReFantazio is strongly reminiscent of its quasi-predecessor Persona 5, which was released in April 2017. You can expect turn-based battles as well as sophisticated group and relationship systems. Instead of school, however, the new RPG throws you into a high fantasy world.
The new trailer for Metaphor: ReFantazio gives you a first impression:
“Could be my game of the year”
Why should I keep an eye on the game? I’m actually the MMORPG expert at MeinMMO. Instead of online worlds, I’ll probably throw myself into the new single-player experience from Atlus from October onwards for a hundred hours – that’s how long it took me to play Persona 5. I also thought the two predecessors were great.
I’m correspondingly excited about the Persona makers’ new project. An anticipation that is continually fueled by every trailer and every developer update. Similar to Persona, the interface, menus and graphics in Metaphor appear to be all of a piece.
The 25 minute long showcase showcases many areas of Metaphor: ReFantazio:
The creature design is wonderfully crazy. The orchestral pieces of music beautifully accompany the fights and story sequences shown. And of course the topic of time management plays a major role again. Traveling to distant places takes time, which you have to plan for as some events only take place at a specific time.
So can Persona 5 await me in a fantasy setting? At first glance it seems that way, but the developers have provided many gameplay innovations in detail. For example, you can be inspired by your relationships with your companions and unlock new archetypes such as the knight. In battle, you have the power to transform into these powerful warriors.
The developers no longer just outsource the fights to fairly generically designed towers or palaces. Although there are many dungeons in the game world of Metaphor, you also roam the open outer regions that are populated by monsters.
So that round-robin battles against easy opponents don’t constantly slow you down, you can optionally switch to a fast real-time system. Alternatively, you can simply avoid the creatures. The random battles of other role-playing games from Japan are not available here.
What is your first impression of Metaphor: ReFantazio? Are you up for the role play? Tell me in the comments! We can pass the time with another single-player RPG until October 11, 2024:
