In an interview with CNN, world-famous actor Sean Penn argued that the Academy has an obligation to provide Zelenskiy with a platform where he can talk about Ukraine’s struggle.
Stating that if Zelensky is not spoken at this year’s Oscar Awards ceremony, the ceremony should be boycotted, Penn said that in such a case, he will melt his own awards in front of everyone.
Penn added, “There is nothing greater the Academy Awards can do than give[Zelenskiy]the opportunity to speak to all of us. I understand that a decision was made not to do that. I am not the one to comment on whether President Zelenskiy wants that.” said.
WAS IN UKRAINE FOR THE DOCUMENTARY
Stressing that the Academy’s failure to support the Ukrainian leader would be “the most immoral moment in Hollywood history”, Penn said:
“I hope that doesn’t happen. I pray that there are no arrogant people in the industry who see themselves as representatives of the good of the majority and decide not to meet with the leader in Ukraine. So, I hope that will not happen. I hope that if it does, (all participants) will walk away.”
Amy Schumer, one of the presenters of this year’s ceremony, told the Academy that Zelenskiy was offered to speak at the ceremony, but it was not accepted.
Oscar awards will find their owners at the ceremony to be held in Los Angeles today.
Penn went to Ukraine to shoot a documentary on the Russian attack on Ukraine.
