At the same time that the House of Representatives voted on an extensive collection package of 95 billion dollars, corresponding to almost 1037 billion kroner, in support of Ukraine, Israel and Gaza, among others, it included a vote threatening China.
The bill that passed gives China’s ByteDance a year to sell its stake in the social media app Tiktok – or the app will be banned from the US.
Can be a long process – or blocked
Even if the proposal becomes law, the company would have up to a year to find a buyer and would likely try to challenge the law in court, arguing that the consequence deprives the app’s millions of users of their rights to the US equivalent of free speech.
A court case could significantly delay the timeline set by Congress, or block the law entirely from taking effect.
