A correctional officer at Skänningenstalten is sentenced by the Linköping District Court for abusing an inmate.
The incident occurred when three caretakers at the institution were to give the inmate food in March last year. When they opened the cell door, the inmate attacked and, according to the verdict, one of the guards hit the inmate and kicked him when he fell to the floor.
The court notes that the custodian entered the cell even though a colleague was about to close the door and therefore considers that it was not a matter of emergency protection. The district court believes that the carer had a position of power and disregarded what applied to the task. He is sentenced to 50 daily fines and must pay SEK 30,000 in damages to the inmate.
The inmate, in turn, is sentenced to one month in prison for attempted violence against an official.
Sveriges Radio’s Kaliber has previously, in an examination of the Skänninganstalten, spoken to 30 guards who testify to excessive violence, humiliation and harassment against inmates by a group of correctional officers.
