The basic premise sounds like a mix of Armageddon – The Last Judgment and Lars von Trier’s apocalyptic drama Melancholia. In the Netflix series, however, the impending apocalypse is told in a more action-packed way. Violence, crime, conspiracy theories and brutal cults are just as much a part of the plot as a teacher who does not shy away from vigilantism to protect her students.
The sci-fi series was directed by Jin-min Kim. He previously directed the thriller series Extracurricular and My Name for Netflix. The story of Goodbye Earth is based on the Japanese novel Shumatsu No Furu (or The Fool At the End of the World) written by Kôtarô Isaka. This also provided the template for the action hit Bullet Train.
