Ice hockey: Brynä’s match winner Karlis Cukste scored the first goal for the club: “Luck on our side”

It was a festive Friday night in Gävle for the home fans.

– The fans are fantastic. They help us every day and today we really needed them, says match winner Karlis Cukste to SVT Sport with a bleeding mouth.

After several frame hits for both teams, Djurgården took the lead in the middle of the second period. Marcus Krüger was in the left corner and sent the puck in front of the goal where Brynäs Simon Bertilsson directed the puck into his own goal for 0-1.

Since there are no own goals in ice hockey, Krüger got the goal.

Lucky goals for Brynäs

Brynäs was in the offensive zone and the puck bounced a bit luckily to Tyler Kelleher, who scored a hat trick last time, who lobbed the puck in at the right post for 1-1.

Not even two minutes later, the Latvian Karlis Cukste poked at the right edge of the rim and sent the puck towards the goal. A club tip from Djurgården’s Calle Odelius made it 2-1 for Brynäs. A random goal like Djurgården’s 0-1.

– I could not have chosen a better opportunity. Scoring goals is not my main job but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the puck go in and we take everything we can get. Sometimes you have luck on your side, says Cukste, who has played around 60 games for Brynäs since he arrived from Czech Trinec before this season.

The winner of the hockey allsvenskan final in the best of seven games goes to the SHL next season.
