In everyday life, the dishwasher is essential to save time and water. However, certain kitchen utensils have no place there. Do you know which ones? Here is the list.
Although very practical for avoiding washing dishes by hand, the dishwasher cannot accommodate all the kitchen utensils. Which ones should you avoid putting in the dishwasher? Here is the list compiled by Dr. Poonam Desai, emergency physician, in a TikTok video.
Plastic utensils
As much as possible, you should avoid putting food plastic in contact with heat. Indeed, when temperatures increase, there is a real risk of the release of microplastics, which are dangerous to health.
If you still have to wash them in the dishwasher, choose containers that bear the pictogram indicating that they can be washed this way. And Dr. Poonam Desai advises to “put them in the top basket” and avoid the hotter bottom of the dishwasher. This also limits the risk of deformation. It also specifies that the use of “Disposable plastics should be avoided whenever possible, as they are not intended to be exposed to heat“.
Wooden utensils
Wood is a natural element, it has the capacity to absorb water but also detergents. It is therefore not recommended to put wooden spoons or a cutting board in the dishwasher. In addition, the latter being a humid and warm place, it promotes bacterial development and these objects can then become real breeding grounds for bacteria, in addition to being damaged.
Children’s pacifiers and bottles
To have a bottle always ready to use, it can be tempting to use the dishwasher. The same goes for quickly washing Baby’s pacifier. But it’s a bad idea. The plastic and rubber they are made from can warp with heat. And in addition, as with wood, there is a real risk of bacterial contamination. We therefore prefer hot water and mild dishwashing liquid to soap up these essential baby items. Don’t forget to rinse them well with clean water.
Non-stick utensils
Perfect for cooking food without making it stick to the bottom of the pan or saucepan, the non-stick is damaged in the dishwasher. If you want to keep your utensils longer, it is better to wash them by hand.
Cast iron utensils
Cast iron utensils are very sturdy and can be kept for a long time. The mistake not to make is to wash them in the dishwasher, otherwise you risk seeing the protective layer of cast iron damaged and allowing your casserole dishes or woks to rust. To clean them, also prefer hand washing.
