The hotly anticipated new ARPG launches on Steam and storms the charts straight away – that’s what the first players say

With No Rest for the Wicked, the makers of the popular Ori series are trying their hand at an ARPG for the first time. Can this genre change go well? Players can see this for themselves as of today, as the ARPG has just launched on Steam.

What game is it about? No Rest for the Wicked is the new ARPG from Moon Studios. They are known for their beautiful Ori games. And the action RPG also promises to be a real eye-catcher with its hand-painted look.

When it was announced at the Game Awards in December 2023, No Rest for the Wicked initially looked like new competition for Diablo 4. Later it became clear that it was more in the direction of Soulslike – but with co-op and housing.

No Rest for the Wicked has been in Early Access on Steam since April 18, 2024. Now it remains to be seen whether Moon Studios can live up to its promise to change the ARPG genre.

34,000 players but mixed reviews

How does No Rest for the Wicked start? The ARPG got off to a pretty strong start on Steam. About an hour and a half after launch, it peaked at 33,983 concurrent players (via SteamDB).

It tops the list of top sellers on Steam and is ahead of Valve’s own long-running hit Counter-Strike 2 and the currently booming Fallout 4.

What do the first players say? The ratings on Steam are currently “balanced” with 60% positive reviews (as of 7:15 p.m.). However, it must be borne in mind that the game has only just been released and the number can still fluctuate greatly once more players have had the opportunity to get an idea.

The main points of criticism so far have been the performance and the fact that the controls cannot currently be remapped. Some Steam users joke: “No rest for the GPU.”

However, the visuals and the captivating and satisfying combat system are positively highlighted. We have compiled some of the first voices for you here:

  • KAIOMON: “[…] I think there lies a diamond in the rough of a game.[…]“
  • Tenoshii: “[…] But the game is damn fun. It’s like the handcrafted top-down ARPG with souls-like combat that we didn’t know we needed.”
  • ItsTayBTW: “The game hasn’t worked since I first closed it. Horrible performance issues. The usual early access difficulties.”
  • So it seems like Moon Studios still has some work to do. That’s what Early Access is there for, too. The developers want to take the community’s feedback into account when working on No Rest for the Wicked.

If you want to get your own impression of No Rest for the Wicked, you can benefit from the introductory offer on Steam until May 2nd. There the ARPG is reduced by 10% and costs €35.99 instead of €39.99. If No Rest for the Wicked leaves early access, it could also become a little more expensive, according to the Steam page.

If that doesn’t suit you, with a bit of luck you can currently play the most hotly anticipated game on Steam for free: Hades 2 shows 3 hours of new gameplay, but the community is only interested in hot gods
