For many, the Lord of the Rings films are among the masterpieces of film history. They won various Oscars, grossed billions of dollars and made stars like Viggo Mortensen. As the actor explained, he found the second and third parts of the series, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, but extremely bad at first.
Lord of the Rings actor reveals creation of fantasy trilogy
According to a 2014 Telegraph interview with Mortensen, director Peter Jackson rushed to complete the entire trilogy by the end of 2000. The actor reported:
He had made all three films by then. But Parts 2 and 3 were complete nonsense. They were put together completely sloppily [und] just not finished at all. They required gigantic subsequent filming, which we then tackled year after year. But [Jackson] wouldn’t have gotten any money for it if the first film hadn’t been a huge success. Parts two and three would have [höchstens auf DVD] can appear.

Peter Jackson was under enormous pressure while filming Lord of the Rings. So it’s conceivable that he wanted to announce the completion of all three films on paper as quickly as possible to satisfy the studio and investors.
As Mortensen suggests, the success of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring made further budget demands much easier to enforce. And even if no fan will want to miss the fantasy trilogy in its cinema or extended version, some still have to ask themselves the question: What would the Lord of the Rings films have looked like in the trash version?
