The Rogue Prince of Persia Preview

Are you ready to explore? Rogue Prince of Persia reintroduces the beloved series in a standalone roguelike experience.

It seems that we will meet many new Prince of Presia games this year. After the recently released Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, we are faced with a brand new production. Following your other metroidvania release today, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, we are here with a new preview: The Rogue Prince of Persia.

on May 14 SteamThe game, which will be available in early access, is being prepared by Dead Cells, one of the developers of Evil Empire. Taking a beloved series like Prince of Persia and bringing it back with a standalone game sounds exciting. In this article, where we will share our experiences at the end of the presentation of the game we were invited by Ubisoft and the 45-minute period we were given to play, we will take a closer look at the story and dynamics of The Rogue Prince of Persia, which will be available in the coming days.

After The Sands of Time, I have yet to encounter a new PoP game that I enjoyed playing. Even The Lost Crown couldn’t quench my Prince thirst. For this reason, it’s a bit like “Ubisoft has such a great brand, why doesn’t it make use of it?” I started to question. The first reason that came to my mind was the negativities brought about by the increases in game production costs. As a matter of fact, “The Rogue Prince of Persia”, which suddenly appears before us, confirms my thesis. Instead of a AAA production, we are faced with a roguelike production from an independent studio.

We control a different version of the Prince in the game. This time, our prince emerges as a brave warrior who sacrifices everything to defend his people. As a result of a Hun invasion, our hero faces the war with the sense of responsibility brought by his position. We need to expel the invading Huns from our country and bring peace back to our people. But if you think it will be that easy, I can easily say that you are wrong.

Although roguelike games generally progress on a single plane, this is Prince. It has to climb somewhere. These climbs also create diversity in the gameplay area. Even though we have some of the powers we remember from previous games (such as going back in time), these do not mean much for a roguelike genre. For example, what I mean by not turning back time is that you just go back when you die and start from the last save point. However, since it is not a significant reflection of what we do, it provides an opportunity for us to take big risks and try again to be successful.

So what makes The Rogue Prince of Persia a game worth trying? The fun structure of the game increases its immersion. When abundant and diverse enemies are combined with strong level design, Rogue Prince of Persia, the combination of the roguelike genre with PoP, has created an enjoyable production. When I combine all this with quality animations, a satisfying gaming experience emerges. Just killing the enemies we encounter in the following levels is not enough; unnecessary combos that you make in order to see the animations again are also added.

Of course, although it is not possible to get a full experience during the 45 minutes of gameplay, what we see and experience shows that the game has plenty of variety. Especially the combat mechanics. There are multiple methods to eliminate your opponent as you progress. Whether it’s with a sword, an arrow or your fists, you can use them all. You don’t have to spend too much time jumping from walls to walls to face your next opponent. As we said, this is an invasion and enemies are everywhere.

Considering the period in which the game takes place, our weapons are not limited to just arrows and swords. There are also other weapons you can use such as spears and daggers. It is possible to use all of these together and embellish your experience with combos.

On the other hand, the game does not offer a graphical revolution. On the contrary, it has an optimization that can work easily even in limited systems. This must be one of the factors that make us prefer it.

The game, which will be available in early access exactly one month later, on May 14, continues the iconic series. Although the work put into Dead Cells is admirable, I still dream of a brand new production that will be visually enhanced and take the Prince’s story to the next level. These productions make us believe that Ubisoft has not forgotten the brand and is preparing us for the new game at some point.
