The City of Brantford has a lineup of events planned to mark the 54th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.

City council has proclaimed the week of April 21 to 27 as Earth Week in Brantford and residents can get involved in environmental initiatives, including a community-wide cleanup and a tree giveaway.

“I invite all residents to come together to take practical steps towards a cleaner, greener future for ourselves and future generations,” said Mayor Kevin Davis. “Participating in the city’s Earth Week events is a great step towards making a meaningful difference in our environment and community.”
The 3rd annual Earth Day Let’s Clean Our City cleanup event will be held on Sunday, April 21 and Monday, April 22 with a call to community members to come together for a massive cleanup effort. Over the past two years, almost 1,050 kilograms of litter was collected by more than 2,300 participants.

Individuals, groups, neighborhood associations and organizations are invited to register online to indicate their cleanup location and needed supplies. Residents are encouraged to use their own reusable gloves, but kits that include a garbage bag, recycling bag, gloves and information on how to dispose of materials will be available for pickup at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Center, 254 North Park St. from 8 am to 8 pm from April 15 to 21, and from City Hall Customer Service, 58 Dalhousie St, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm April 15 to 19.
Participants can leave their collected litter at the curbside with their regular garbage pickup if it is five bags or less in total. Larger amounts can be taken to the Wayne Gretzky Sports Center parking lot; Holmedale Park, 331 Grand Rive Ave.; or the Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Center, 333 Erie Ave.

Prizes will be randomly awarded to registered participants who submit a photo online of their cleanup efforts. Prizes include a $50 gift card for individuals; $500 to a neighborhood association to be spent on an environmental initiative; a $500 cash donation to a group to a charity of their choice; one of two countertop composters for participating schools.
Register at Brantford.ca/CleanBrantford by 4:30 pm on Friday, April 19.
To support climate action, the City of Brantford is offering 400 free trees for residents to plant on their properties. Starting at 9 am on Monday, April 15, homeowners can register online at Brantford.ca/FreeTrees on a first come, first served basis to select their preferred tree species. Ten native species will be available with a limit of one per property. Tree pickup is scheduled for Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 at 1 Sherwood Dr. between 9 am and 2 pm
Join the Brant Tree Coalition for the 11th annual Brantford Community Tree Planting on Saturday, April 27 from 10 am to 2 pm at Brier Park at 65 Winding Way. The group will plant 1,000 native trees and shrubs to help naturalize an area of the park. For more information, call 519-759-4150.
