Is the film parody dead? Not for long. The Scary Movie series was the last acceptable offshoot of comedy hits like Hot Shots and The Naked Gun. In 2013, the horror franchise rattled its last gag into cinemas with Scary Movie 5. Since then things have been quiet. Until now. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Paramount has the Scary Movie reboot shared with the rest of the thigh-thumping world.
What is known about the new Scary Movie film
The scary fun aka Scary Movie 6 is described by the Hollywood Reporter as a “new approach to the franchise.” It also says:
No other creative personnel have been confirmed yet, not to mention the casting.
Yes, there really are already 5 Scary Movie films
Scary Movie was released in 2000, the second film Scary Movie 2 followed in 2001. From part 3 onwards, The Naked Gun maker David Zucker took the lead, who directed Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4. Fun Fact: Chernobyl and The Last of Us author Craig Mazin co-wrote the scripts for both films.

The Scary Movie original stars Regiina Hall and Anna Faris
Malcolm D. Lee’s Scary Movie 5 was released in 2013. All five films grossed a total of over 830 million dollars. However, part 5 didn’t even break the 100 million mark worldwide. A reboot is hardly surprising in the age of reboots, but it is under pressure to come up with something new or at least gags on a Scary Movie 1 level.
There’s plenty of material for horror parodies thanks to hits like A Quiet Place, Smile and M3GAN. And even Scream – ultimately the basis of Scary Movie anno 2000 – continues to be produced. Part 7 is in progress. But Scary Movie hasn’t caught up with the original yet.
