With the Solidarity Fund, the municipality of Utrecht hopes to put an end to a recurring discussion in schools about the voluntary parental contribution. Many schools charge parents money to organize school trips, outings or camps, for example. This contribution has been voluntary since the end of 2021: a school cannot force parents to pay. If payment is not made, a child must still be able to officially participate. But according to critics, this often does not happen, or parents are pressured to pay, even if they do not want or cannot do so.
