Don’t do this with your tax refund

Dont do this with your tax refund

At the beginning of March, the Tax Agency started sending out the income declaration to those with a digital mailbox, and between March 15 and April 15, the declarations are sent out in paper form.

Many already know now whether they will receive a tax refund and for those who declared before April 3, the payment of the money will already take place in April. Those who declare before May 2 will instead receive the money in June.

Change the declaration afterwards – get the money in April anyway

Declaration 2024: Are you one of those the Tax Agency is reviewing this year?

But if it is now the case that you will get a much-needed small addition to the bank account, what should you do with the money? News24 asked Magnus Hedberg, economist and expert in the immensely popular TV program “Lyxfällan”.

– First of all, you should stop and think about where the money really does the most good for you and your wallet right now. It has easily happened that the hotly awaited return burns in the pocket and far too many indulge in something spontaneous that they later regret. Of course, you can use your tax refund exactly as you want, but the most important thing is that you make a conscious choice how you choose to do with them, he states.

If it is the case that you are in what Hedberg describes as an “economic emergency”, you should try to replenish the reserves and buffers you have used up.

– If it has gone so far that you have also taken on insanely expensive credits and loans, it is of course necessary to resolve these with the tax refund before you even think about doing something else with the money.

Made a mistake in the declaration? That way you avoid the expensive fee

Split your tax refund in 2024

Anyone who nevertheless has a good financial situation can advantageously split the tax refund, says Magnus Hedberg.

– For example, one third to the buffer savings account, one third to long-term savings and the last third to something wonderfully spontaneous that adds a golden edge to existence here and now after a long, tough winter.

At the same time, of course, there are certain things that Magnus Hedberg directly advises against doing when you receive your tax refund.

– I would definitely advise against playing away the tax refund at an online casino in the hope of betting a little bigger and making a big profit. The chances of profit are microscopic and the risk that you will burn the return faster than you had thought is imminent, he says and continues:

– As I said, everyone decides for themselves how they choose to use their refund, but spontaneously buying up everything immediately the money landed in the account rarely creates any lasting happiness. Instead, find your own balance and enjoy the tax refund with a clear conscience.

The mistakes you should not make in the declaration: “Happens often”
