The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has held a meeting to review some of the rules of football and has decided that the five changes stay. This measure, which was taken provisionally due to the pandemic situation, has permeated the world of football and finally the organization that is in charge of reviewing and updating the rules of football has decided to maintain it. Another measure in relation to the rest of the players that has been studied is to extend the breaks from 15 minutes to 25, however, it has been discarded. The reason is that such a long inactivity during the match could be detrimental to the players.
The other most notable decision of the IFAB has to do with the goalkeepers. Until now, in penalty shots they had to have both feet on the goal line and could not get ahead, however, in this last meeting it has been decided that goalkeepers may have one foot in front of the line and the other behind. A sanctioning measure was also agreed upon: coaches may also be sent off during penalty shootouts.
They also studied the first results of the global concussion trial. Despite the fact that more than 100 competitions participated or have participated, very few incidents of concussion have been reported since January 2021, the date on which the test began. The decision has been made to extend the study until 2023, before making a determination on the matter. Updates to the VAR systems to improve accuracy and faster decision-making on offside plays were also discussed.
