2 brothers worked for over 20 years on a game that made them millionaires – one bought his dream car

When brothers Tarn and Zach Adams brought their long-running free2play game Dwarf Fortress to Steam as a premium version in December 2022, it made them millionaires almost overnight. Zach Adams fulfilled what was apparently a long-held wish and bought a Honda Civic.

What kind of game is this?

The game has now sold over 800,000 copies and is on the wish lists of more than a million players, the brothers revealed to PC Gamer.

This number could increase significantly in the foreseeable future, because the long-awaited adventure mode of Dwarf Fortress is scheduled to go into beta on April 17th – this was previously missing in the premium version.

“I always wanted to have one”

What do the developers do with the wealth? The Adams brothers have apparently remained extremely down-to-earth so far. Zach Adams told PC Gamer that he and his wife had bought a new house – he was planning on doing so in 2022 because the old one had probably become a bit too small.

He also treated himself to a new car, which is almost a given for new millionaires. Instead of a Lamborghini or a sky blue Porsche, Adams’ choice was a little different: “I decided to buy a Honda Civic,” Zach told PCG, “because I always wanted one.”

The Civic has been sold by Honda since 1972 in eleven model generations, almost all of which belong to the modest compact class. With the current hybrid model Type R, Hona is almost scratching the middle class, the ADAC recently reported. It is not known which model the developer owns.

Things don’t seem to be much different with his brother. Tarn Adams values feeling “comfortable and stable.” When asked if he had any plans to reward himself when Dwarf Fortress hits 1 million units sold, he replied: “I mean, I haven’t really thought about it [eine Milion Verkäufe zu erreichen]. Because you ask yourself: When is this going to happen?”

Maybe by the end of April.

Dwarf Fortress promises its players maximum freedom. The simulation is so deep and complex that unexpected problems can arise – such as the legendary story with the bars full of dead cats from 2015. But one idea went too far for the developers, so they had to intervene personally.
