Shady companies that pollute the environment with their toxic waste have long been known to be… effective antagonists established. The incredible wealth and widespread facelessness of such companies make them a huge threat. But what if this story isn’t pure fiction?
In Poisoned Truth, director Todd Haynes tells the story of lawyer Robert Bilott. He risked his career for years to find out the truth about this Chemical company DuPont to uncover. The film was completely undeservedly overlooked in the cinema, even though it was initially thought to have a chance of winning an Oscar.

Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo) did it. After years of trying, he is finally a partner in his law firm in Cincinnati. As a corporate lawyer, he represents chemical companies, which is why he is not very interested in the case of Wilbur Tennant (Bill Camp). The farmer has his Lost 190 cows to a strange disease and sees a connection to the DuPont corporation. He bought the neighboring property and is said to have poisoned the water there with waste.

However, the case doesn’t let Bilott go and he initiates his own investigation. When he travels to West Virginia to see what’s going on, he slowly begins to believe Wilbur. He finds out that DuPont is using chemicals which have toxic effects and the company has to dispose of its toxic waste.
Despite the clear facts, the case wears on the protagonist – and therefore makes him angrier
The chemical company is poisoning the drinking water in the area clear from the start. But the lawyer’s real job is to collect and present evidence to hold the chemical giant accountable. And that turns out to be extremely difficult. After all, Bilott is dealing with an entire system that is increasingly ganging up against him.
Thanks to Ruffalo’s acting, you can feel as you watch how he and his relationship with his wife Sarah (Anne Hathaway) is slowly falling apart due to this herculean task. And the more trouble he gets into, the more you wonder how you can even fight such an unjust system.
Marvel star Mark Ruffalo also takes on big companies in his private life
Mark Ruffalo is not only an outstanding actor who has been nominated for multiple Oscars and won a Golden Globe. He also advocates privately for issues that are important to him.
He was also involved in the big strike in Hollywood last year. He used his presence, among other things, to call for a revolution in Hollywood on Twitter. In it he suggests to his colleagues: to take on more roles in indie filmsto support the film industry outside of the major studios.
