As the Hollywood Reporter reports, initial forecasts assumed that the film would gross between $45 and $55 million in the US on its opening weekend. By current cinema standards, that was okay optimistic numbers. However, the monster brawl now has an impressive $80 million.
This makes Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire the most successful start of a MonsterVerse film in the USA since the first part there. Godzilla grossed $93 million in 2014 (via Box Office Mojo). The franchise has been far away from these numbers in recent years. Godzilla x Kong also scores as the fifth best Easter start.

In addition to the USA, the film was released internationally in 64 other markets and therefore grossed a total of $194 million. Godzilla x Kong marks one of the biggest blockbuster successes of 2024 so far, especially since the budget was relatively slim at $135 million (via Deadline).
One of the most interesting numbers comes from China. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Godzilla x Kong grossed an impressive $44 million, which is what it is today Hardly any US blockbuster succeeds anymore. For comparison: Dune: Part Two has only made $46.5 million in China in its entire run.
The exciting question is whether Godzilla x Kong can maintain this box office level or collapse in its second week. This is the key to big blockbuster success these days: Run stably for several weeks/months. Godzilla x Kong has another advantage: it hasn’t even opened in some cinema markets yet.
The numbers are definitely a good sign for the MonsterVerse. After five films and two spin-off series, the franchise has a total box office take of over $2.1 billion (via The Numbers) and there is no sign of a leveling off of interest on the part of the audience.
