Consuming fruits and vegetables is good for health, especially to protect it from many diseases. Consuming an insufficient number is a risk factor in the development of cardiovascular pathologies. Researchers were particularly interested in cranberries, which, according to their study, have protective properties for heart health.

Eating 100 g of cranberries a day is good for the health of the heart and blood vessels

The cranberry, also called cranberry, is a small red and tangy fruit widely used in North America. However, for several years, this vegetable has been acclaimed by many European specialists, because it has health benefits, in addition to bringing a colorful and gourmet touch to the plate.

Already known to have a preventive action against cystitis, cranberry would also have virtues to protect cardiovascular functions. This is revealed by a study conducted by researchers at King’s College London and published in the medical journal Food and function.

According to them, consuming 100 grams of these small acid berries each day would improve the dilation of a greater number of arteries, in healthy people.

To carry out their research, the specialists recruited 45 healthy male volunteers. Each of them ingested 9 grams of cranberry powder daily, the equivalent of 100 g of fresh fruit or a placebo (decoy) for a month.

Comparing the results, the experts found that the men who consumed cranberries showed a real improvement in their cardiovascular function. Even more incredible, the beneficial effects occur quickly, two hours after consumption of this berry.

The lead author of this study, Dr Anna Rodriguez-Mateos, Senior Lecturer in Nutrition in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King’s College, explains the phenomenon: “The increase in polyphenols […] in the blood and the improvements in blood circulation after consumption of cranberries underscores the important role that these fruits can play in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. As a reminder, polyphenols are molecules produced naturally by berries in order to defend themselves against various attacks.

It’s a great discovery, knowing that consuming these berries is a healthy gesture rather easy to perform on a daily basis and within everyone’s reach.
