Football: Death at Gamla Ullevi between Gais and Brommapojkarna in the Allsvenskan premiere

During yesterday, Gais played his first match in the Allsvenskan since his return and took on the Brommapojkarna at Gamla Ullevi.

Then a tragic event occurred just before kick-off. A spectator suffered an acute illness and was given CPR by staff at the arena. Later, the person was taken to Sahlgrenska hospital and then died.

– It is absolutely terrible that, on such a day that would be an incredible joy and a day that we have really longed for, it ends like this. It is terrible that something like this happens and we send all our thoughts to this person’s relatives and loved ones, says Gai’s communications manager Szofia Jakobsson to GP.

“The decision was made that the match would be played”

The match was played as planned after the incident.

– The person was taken in the ambulance about a quarter of an hour before the start of the match. At that point, we simply did not know what the person’s condition was. We had no more information then than that a case of illness had occurred and that the person in question had been taken away in an ambulance. With the background of that information, the decision was made that the match would be played, says Szofia Jakobsson to GP.
