West Elgin Pharmacy has focus on customer care

Peter Adam moved from the east coast to Ontario in 1995 and worked in a pharmacy in Chatham from 1995-2002, in London from 2002-2009, and with a pharmacy servicing long-term care and retirement homes from 2009-2017.

Anna, Denise, and Sue are all long-term staff and are the keys to ensuring your visits to the pharmacy are positive from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave. Lindsay and Renee both live in West Elgin and worked with Adams at the long-term care pharmacy in London and now keep the pharmacy part of the business running smoothly.

Kelsey and Katie are both pharmacists and recent graduates from the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy. Kelsey works at the West Lorne Pharmacy full time and Katie works at the pharmacy as well as Turner Drug Store in London.

Peggy is a registered nurse. She spends most of her time running the pharmacy’s PacMed and PacVision machines.

Alice is the pharmacy’s part-time driver and Madison its part-time high school student.

Adams characterizes his staff as a big family who cares very much for each other, and it is a joy to come to work and spend time with each other.

He describes his experience in West Lorne as being “awesome”.

“I grew up in a small town in Newfoundland where you knew everyone,” he said. “It has been nice getting to know the people of West Elgin by their names.”

Adams’ business motto or philosophy is to be: Precise, Professional, Personal and to provide Prompt Service.

To improve the experience, Adams invested in several technologies. They include a point-of-sale system which tracks the sales of front shop items and when prescriptions are picked up.

He upgraded the Kroll pharmacy software to a paper-less version which has a lot of built-in safety features including bar-code scanning, tracking of lots and expiry dates, and a seven-point on-screen check to improve accuracy on new Rxs and refills.

He added FaxRx Cloud, an integrated, web-based fax module which allows the pharmacy to archive and attach faxes to patient records ensuring they don’t miss or lose information.

Adams related on his experience with LTC/retirement homes when he invested in PacMed technology which accurately, efficiently, and securely bags medications into personalized easy to use compliance packaging.

To further enhance safety, he invested in PacVision technology which accurately and reliably checks every dose/pouch in the compliance packaging and flags any discrepancies so they can be corrected.

Adams plans for the future include a new location for the pharmacy.

“We have been planning a new location to better serve the people of West Elgin,” he said. “Hoping this becomes a reality in 2022.”
