Over 60 suspected human anthrax cases have been reported in Laos.
Anthrax spreads through bacteria in the soil and often affects grazing cattle and wild animals, but can also infect humans and in some cases lead to death.
News of the Laotian outbreak has prompted neighboring Thailand to begin closely monitoring livestock, especially near the border with Laos. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered surveillance of the disease to “protect the public,” according to a statement citing 54 suspected cases in Laos.
Media in Laos have reported 65 suspected cases, 54 of them in the province of Champasak, which borders Thailand.
