Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen directed the western adventure The Dead Don’t Hurt
Even if it sounds a bit like it, The Dead Don’t Hurt is not the title of the next James Bond film, but the name of the western into which Lord of the Rings actor Viggo Mortensen put a lot of himself: He is not only a leading actor and director, but also a screenwriter, producer and composer. The actor’s love of horses has been known since the Lord of the Rings films and Hidalgo, and now he’s using it for his new adventure. In the trailer, the first character dies after just 15 seconds.
Viggo Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt is set in the American West in the 1860s. Here, the independent Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) enters into a relationship with the Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Viggo Mortensen) and moves to Nevada with him. But the outbreak of… The American Civil War separates the couple and suddenly the retarded Vivienne finds herself threatened on her land by a corrupt mayor (Danny Huston) and the violent son (Solly McLeod) of a powerful rancher (Garret Dillahunt). When the couple meets again, nothing is the same.
For Viggo Mortensen, the western is his second directing project after Falling (2020). The trailer for The Dead Don’t Hurt already shows the Lord of the Rings star among all the beautiful landscape shots doesn’t take the classic gunslinger approachbut also leaves room for its second female protagonist in its story of love, revenge and forgiveness.
After its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, The Dead Don’t Hurt is coming to the US May 31, 2024 to the cinemas. A German start date is not yet known.
