The UN Security Council approved a resolution on a cease-fire in Gaza, and the UN Secretary-General believes it would be “unforgivable” if it was not implemented.
The Israeli foreign minister announces that Israel will not comply with the resolution.
“We will destroy Hamas and continue fighting until the last hostage comes home,” writes Foreign Minister Israel Katz on X.
Of the Security Council’s 15 members, 14 voted yes to the resolution, the United States was the only country that abstained from voting.
“The Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, which calls for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” writes UN Secretary-General António Guterres on X.
FN: A failure is unforgivable
António Guterres also writes that the resolution must be implemented and that failure would be “unforgivable”.
The Palestinian Authority and Hamas reportedly welcome the decision, according to CNN. From the Israeli side, they were not as positive. Israeli UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan claims the resolution calls for a ceasefire without demanding hostages.
– It undermines efforts to secure their release, Erdan said.
“Duty to keep fighting”
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz writes on X that they will not follow the resolution.
“The State of Israel will not end. We will destroy Hamas and continue fighting until the last hostage comes home,” writes Foreign Minister Israel Katz on X.
Even the former Israeli Defense Minister and member of the War Cabinet, Benny Gantz commented on the Security Council’s decision on X.
“The State of Israel has a moral obligation to continue fighting until the hostages are returned and the threat from Hamas is averted,” writes Gantz.
He also writes that the Security Council’s decision has no “operational significance” for Israel.
