Boliden invests billions in a new electrolysis plant

The electrolysis plant in Rönnskär, Skelleftehamn was completely destroyed in a fire in June 2023 and today Boliden decided to build a new electrolysis plant for close to five billion kroner.

Rönnskärsverken is Sweden’s only smelter for the production of base metals, and works with the recycling of electronic scrap.

  • Boliden’s CEO Mikael Staffas believes that 2023 was a turbulent year, both because of the fire but also the world economic situation.

    – Those of us in the industry are used to setbacks, but now we look forward, says Mikael Staffas.

    Invested in waste management

Boliden has now invested in slag handling and secured it for the next 15 years.

    – If we hadn’t developed it, we wouldn’t have been able to handle the slag and then Rönnskär wouldn’t be able to function either, says Mikael Staffas.

The car has been around for 100 years and Mikael Staffas believes that this is the first step for the next 100 years.

CEO Mikael Staffas says that it is not just an investment for Skellefteå.

    – We must not forget that this is an investment for the hinterland as well. It is an insurance for the future, says Mikael Staffas.

    Unclear about new jobs

According to Boliden’s communicator, it is too early to say how many more employees the electrolysis plant needs, but that the investment itself will create jobs
