  • Last Friday, a woman was found dead in an apartment in Borlänge, and according to the police, there were signs that she had been the victim of a crime. A man in his 50s, who according to the police had some kind of relationship with the woman, is suspected of having killed her.

That same evening, the police were alerted to a case of illness in central Stockholm. Once at the scene, they found a dead woman inside and suspected that she had been brought back to life. A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

“The most common murder site is the woman’s own bed”

    – I am saddened. If it is as the police suspect, it is completely unacceptable, says Rebecka Andersson, general secretary at Unizon.

Unizon is a national organization for women’s shelters and other support activities that work for an equal society free from violence.

    – Just three years ago, several women were killed in a short time in Sweden. Even then, there were many of us who said that it is completely unacceptable. Nevertheless, we see that it can happen again.

One survey made by the Crime Prevention Council (Brå) shows that when women are killed, the perpetrator is usually a current or former partner. In 80 percent of the cases, the crime scene is the home of one of the people involved.

    – It is extremely tragic. We know that the most common place of murder is the woman’s own bed, a place that most of us associate with security.

For men, the perpetrator is usually not someone close to them. The home is the most common crime scene (40 percent), but 27 percent of fatal violence against men takes place in a public place. For women, the corresponding figure is eight percent.
