After Cristóbal Balenciaga, it’s up to the German designer Karl Lagerfeld that Disney+ dedicates a series. The show begins in the 70s, when the man who would later be nicknamed “the emperor of fashion” was only 38 years old. Then unknown to the general public, Karl Lagerfeld, played by Daniel Brühl, met the very provocative Jacques de Bascher. Played by Théodore Pellerin, the Parisian dandy becomes the couturier’s lover and accompanies him in his rise, while the German couturier measures himself against the talent of his lifelong friend and rival, Yves Saint Laurent. Conflicts of egos, excessive parties and, of course, designs of iconic looks, Karl Lagerfeld establishes himself over the episodes as one of the most respected designers in the world.
Five years after the death of the Kaiser, who worked at the houses of Chanel, Balmain, Chloé and Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld’s influence on fashion is still as important as ever. His memory was even celebrated during the Met Gala 2023which had the theme Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.
A haute couture casting
Alongside Daniel Brühl and Théodore Pellerin, a high-profile cast will embody the personalities who have shaped the luxury industry. Arnaud Valois, male revelation at the 2018 Lumière Festival and main actor in film 120 Beats per minute interpreter Yves Saint Laurentwhile Alex Lutz, César for best actor in 2019 and Molière in 2016 and 2020, plays Pierre Bergé. To complete this prestigious list, Agnès Jaoui, who received the César for best actress in 1998, plays Gaby Aghion, the founder of the house Chloe.
The six episodes of the series adapted from the bestseller Kaiser Karl signed by the journalist Raphaëlle Bacqué will be available on the platform Disney++ from June 7, 2024. A haute couture show not to be missed under any circumstances.
