The Somali Islamist extremist group al-Shabaab has attacked a hotel in the capital Mogadishu. A loud explosion and gunfire have been heard at the Hotel Syl, located in a neighborhood usually spared from unrest.
The hotel is often occupied by government representatives and other dignitaries.
The terrorist network al-Shabaab confirms on Telegram that it is behind an attack.
The number of murders in Somalia’s capital has decreased recently as security efforts have been strengthened. The most recent large-scale attack took place in October 2022, when at least 120 people were killed when two car bombs exploded at a busy road intersection.
