During the previous edition, the noise standards were exceeded and this was in danger of happening again with the current application. Kalff knew a solution for this: if the Utrecht Pride became a so-called ‘image-defining event’ for the city, then the noise standards would no longer apply. If this noise standard is not increased, Utrecht Pride risks becoming ‘a rather dull standing reception’, according to Kalff. In his letter he writes: “If Utrecht attaches importance to being a progressive, inclusive and diverse city, it is inevitable that the second largest event in Utrecht and the second Pride in the Netherlands will be labeled ‘Image-defining event’. [te] with the associated noise standard.”
