An ingenious space saga that gets even better and more

The Moviepilot editorial team has chosen the 50 best sci-fi series since 2000. The space epic The Expanse landed at number 1 in the ranking and was able to prevail against (also) fantastic hits such as Westworld, Doctor Who and Rick and Morty.

All 6 seasons with a total of 62 episodes of concentrated sci-fi entertainment are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video *. But what makes The Expanse the perfect science fiction entertainment?

On Amazon: The Expanse is a massive science fiction epic

An adaptation of the first six books in the nine-part novel series by James SA Corey (actually Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), The Expanse tells of the political and human conflicts in the solar system. Because in the 24th century, humanity has long since expanded beyond the Earth.

But the Relations between the people of Earth, the Martian military and the Belters from the asteroid belt Near Mars and Jupiter are tense – to put it mildly. In the middle of it all is the crew of the small spaceship Rocinante, made up of people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

What makes the story of The Expanse so special is its changeability. Power games and conspiracies by politics, the military, activists and extremists are always the driving force, but with each season the range of genres within the sci-fi framework expands. Sometimes The Expanse presents itself as a space crime thriller, sometimes as a conspiracy thriller or pure survival horror in space. Large alien myths are also added.

However, the heart of the series is the characters, whose decisions can have devastating consequences many episodes later. So you can expect a story that is constantly building up over the years increasingly complex and engaging over the course of 62 episodes becomes. The Expanse is never monotonous.

The Expanse is the all-round package among sci-fi series

The Expanse is the ultimate space saga complete package and, in addition to the outstanding story, delivers everything that genre fans could hope for from a representative science fiction series. The focus here is on a well-thought-out vision of the future, which is usually characterized by scientific realism and explainable technologies.

Weightlessness in space and its effects on the human body has rarely been so convincing and frightening depicted as in The Expanse. People who travel to other planets are confronted with a wide variety of gravitational forces. And more than once, space travel can turn into a life-threatening nightmare in a matter of seconds.

However, what sets The Expanse apart from all the other great sci-fi series of the last few years is the unique worldbuilding. Without much explanation and often in passing, there are countless details to discover in each episode. These tell us more and more about the different cultures, class systems and the economic, social and political constitution of the various places in the Sol system.

Although not all nine novels were ultimately made into films and a few secrets were left unanswered, The Expanse finds a fantastic conclusion to the central theme of the story. And that’s almost a rarity in series these days: a six-season journey that’s absolutely worth it.
