The income gap between women and men continues to increase, and it may now take up to a hundred years before equal wages are achieved in Sweden.
This is shown by a new analysis from the Gender Equality Authority, reports Sweden’s Radio Ekot.
The long-term trend of a slowly narrowing income gap between men and women was broken in 2020.
– This something that is not really acceptable, as much as income differences have increased in recent years, it has not increased since the turn of the millennium, says Sara Andersson, investigator at the Equality Agency to Ekot.
– It leads to negative consequences on an individual level when women receive lower incomes, it becomes difficult to support themselves and their children.
In 2022, women aged 20 to 64 received an average of SEK 6,800 less than men every month after tax. On average, they earned 20 percent less than the men. Among the elderly, the differences are even greater. Women over 65 have 30 percent lower net income than men in the same age group.
