2022May 16 – The government decides that Sweden will apply for NATO membership.
May 18 – Sweden and Finland submit their membership applications to NATO. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erodgan says Turkey “will not say yes” to them.
June 28 – Agreement is reached between Turkey, Sweden and Finland at the NATO summit in Madrid. Turkey releases its veto.
July 5 – Sweden and Finland formally receive the status of prospective members.

March 22 – The Riksdag approves the government’s proposal for Sweden to join NATO April 4 – Finland formally becomes a new NATO member.
July 10-12 – At the NATO summit, Erdogan promises to “as soon as possible” send the Swedish application to parliament for ratification.

January 3 – Turkey’s parliament approves Sweden’s NATO application.
February 26 – Hungary’s parliament approves as the last country to admit Sweden as the 32nd member of NATO.
