“Dead before it appeared”

Although the PvE MMORPG Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen is still in the pre-alpha phase, many players are disappointed with the title. Pantheon was actually supposed to be a classic old-school MMORPG like Everquest, but even in the pre-alpha it was offending some players with its monetization.

What is the problem? In order to get a taste of the pre-alpha phase, players have to pay a lot of money. Every 6 weeks there is a new season in the pre-alpha, which comes with significant updates. To experience the seasons, players must pay at least the following amounts:

  • 1 week: $50
  • 2 weeks: $250
  • 6 weeks: $750
  • So if you want to experience the entire pre-alpha phase with all its updates, you have to pay $750 every 6 weeks. There is even the option to get even more expensive packages.

There were numerous biting comments when the announcement was made. Now players have come together in a Reddit thread and are even declaring the game dead, even though it hasn’t even been released yet.

In the following trailer you can get an idea of what Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen actually is:

“They no longer make the MMORPG they promised”

In the Reddit thread, players are venting their anger over monetization. User Coolboyman thinks that it no longer looks like the development team is developing the MMORPG that they promised at the beginning.

And indeed: the brains behind Pantheon, Brad McQuaid, died suddenly in 2019. He was responsible for games like Everquest and Vanguard and he was the vision behind Pantheon. The fans get the impression in the comments that developments after his death would no longer continue as McQuaid would have wanted.

Other users are even more harsh in their judgment of Pantheon:

  • R4zorCRO: “The game died before it was even released.”
  • MouthBreatherGaming: “I don’t know Pantheon, but every time I see Seasons now it almost makes me sick because to me that just means a company is putting out a shell of a game to see if it works People take the bait at the cash shop, and if they don’t, they give up and move on, having invested as little as necessary upfront.”
  • saggonauntlyh84: “Well, that’s disappointing. I was really hoping that I would have an immersive MMORPG experience and not a money grab like every other game out there. It’s time to find a new game to obsess over.”
  • However, there are also supporters of the pricing model: One user writes that the development team only calls the test phase a season. It would just mean that they would draw up something like a roadmap during the testing phase.

That’s why he thinks the title of the Reddit thread is misleading. The developers would not discontinue the MMORPG and switch to a season-based genre. The monetization seems strange, but that shouldn’t be a big deal for fans.

Pantheon has already attracted criticism in the past when it wanted to improve the graphics: The hope for fans of PvE MMORPGs says magic words that everyone wants to hear: better graphics
