The man threatened, beat and strangled his former partner.
In the district court, he was convicted of assault – but escaped prison.
The district court writes in the judgment that the man has an alcohol addiction that “tends to lead him to crime” and instead he was sentenced to probation.
The incident occurred in Norrköping during the spring of last year. The woman had called the police crying and told them that she had been attacked by her partner, something Norrköping Tidningar was the first to report on.
The man and the woman had been drinking alcohol together with a friend. Then they both fell asleep on the sofa.
Then she was woken up by the man attacking her and pulling her to the floor. When she was down he kicked her. The woman stated in the interrogation that the man “grabbed her by the neck and asked in an angry tone if she wanted to die”, when she tried to get up.
The woman alerted the police who came to the home and woke the man who was sleeping on the couch when he was arrested. The man states that he had “drank quite a lot” and that he did not think he had assaulted her.
Escapes prison because of his addiction
In the district court, the man was convicted of assault. He has on previous occasions been convicted of illegal threats, then the punishment was a day’s fine. The probation service’s assessment was that the man in this case could be sentenced to a custodial sentence, taking into account his addiction.
“A probation order with a requirement to participate in care and treatment that probation deems appropriate would be supportive for him,” the judgment states.
The district court writes that the assault man is convicted of has a penalty value of two months in prison. But they share the probation service’s assessment and write that the man has an alcohol addiction that “tends to lead him to crime”.
The man is therefore sentenced to probation and community service for 60 hours. He must also carry out the treatment that probation deems appropriate and provide evidence that he is sober.
The woman states that she previously applied for a restraining order against the man, but that it was not granted. She also states that she wanted to move from Norrköping after the incident as she was afraid that the man would come home to her when he is under the influence.
