An off-leash dog park is a fenced area where residents have the opportunity to exercise their dogs off-leash without being in contravention of municipal bylaws.

The Tilbury dog park is proposed for Kirkham Park, on Lyon Avenue, on the site of the former ball diamond, municipal officials stated in a media release on Wednesday.

All comments received will be included in a future report to municipal council considering the dog park designation. This is expected to come forward for consideration in late spring of this year.

The group requesting the park has a social media page, titled Tilbury Dog Off Leash Park, which can be found on Facebook.

Chatham-Kent has two designated off-leash dog parks: Happy Tails off-leash dog park in Wallaceburg and John Waddell dog park in Chatham.

A third park in Dresden has been approved but construction has not begun, officials said in the release.

To facilitate a dog park, a local committee is required to fund the capital costs, as well as be responsible for its ongoing upkeep and operation.

The municipality provides support through the designation of land, garbage collection and general maintenance.

Users of the parks must abide by rules that can be found here: https://www.chatham-kent.ca/explore/Documents/DOLRA%20Rules%20and%20Regulations.pdf
