The cool kids on Steam are currently playing Balatro. This is a deck-building game based on poker and is a roguelike. In addition to Steam, where it works great on the Steam Deck, Balatro has also been playable on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and the Nintendo Switch since February 20, 2024.

What is Balatro?

  • In Balatro you put together a deck of playing cards with the aim of winning rounds and expanding your deck with different joker cards.
  • The game was created by a solo developer operating under the label “LocalThunk”.
  • It got rolling at the Steam Next Fest and has now developed a strong reputation.

    How are the reviews? The PC version has an impressive 89% on Metacritic. On PS5 and Nintendo Switch even 90%.

    On Steam itself, the reviews are even more positive: 97% of the reader reviews submitted are positive:

  • A player writes after 7 hours: “If poker is so great, why isn’t there Poker 2?” – Balatro.
  • Another writes: “The game feeds my gambling addiction, but it doesn’t keep me in crippling debt and depression.”
  • Another has already spent 28 hours in Balatro and writes: “The question is not whether you start with Balatro. The question is how do you stop Balatro.”

    • And is that successful? Yes, Balatro is currently preparing to become one of the most successful roguelikes ever. It’s close to “Slay the Spire”. Balatro currently has a player peak of 35,018 and that could soon be broken again.

    As the developer revealed on February 23rd, 250,000 games had already been sold in just 72 hours – and Balatro was officially “Steam Deck verified.”

    LocalThunk says on Twitter that he has now asked Windows whether Balatro can be installed as a bundle together with Solitare on any computer.

    Balatro costs just under €13 on Steam. On the PS5 and Xbox you pay €15, on the Switch you pay €14.
