A rare video game was to be auctioned for 14,000 euros. But an honest collector told the seller the true value of the specimen. The young player ended up receiving the equivalent of over 266,000 euros for the 37-year-old NES game from Nintendo.
In the history of video games, there have always been special consoles and games that are highly sought after by collectors and sometimes change hands for horrendous sums of money.
The rare example of a video game was recently offered on eBay for 14,000 euros, well below its true value. Luckily, the young seller realized his mistake and, thanks to a conscientious collector, was able to sell the game for an incredible 266,000 euros.
Rare copy of The Legend of Zelda is worth 266,000 euros
What kind of game was sold? A young gamer who calls himself Kiro was in possession of a coveted copy of the NES game The Legend of Zelda. A family member had purchased the original production of the video game from Nintendo when it was released in 1987.
Until this point, he had no idea how valuable his sealed version of the game really was. Without finding out about a possible purchase price, Kiro created an auction on eBay with the title. He was hoping for proceeds of the equivalent of 14,000 to 18,000 euros.
How did the auction go? As soon as the offer was published, he started receiving messages from people who were willing to pay more than the asking price. For example, a potential buyer offered him over 27,000 euros if he could pick up the copy directly on site.
Kiro stopped the eBay auction when the last bid was over 16,000 euros. He realized that his game had to be much more valuable than he initially thought. An honest collector contacted him on eBay and informed him about his rare copy of The Legend of Zelda.
Why is it so valuable? With the new knowledge, Kiro, on the advice of the experienced collector, turned to a rating service, which checked the Nintendo title and gave it a high rating.
Since it is a sealed first edition of the 37-year-old game for the NES, this copy is highly sought after by collectors and is therefore traded at a high price.
In order to achieve the highest possible sales price, the title was then auctioned off on the Heritage Auction auction platform, which specializes in this type of game.
There the video game from Nintendo changed hands for over 266,000 euros. Thanks to the collector’s honesty, Kiro got almost 20 times the original asking price.
In addition to special copies of old video games, consoles from some manufacturers are also very popular.
