The young about the Sámi Parliament: “No real influence”

Elin Nejne was one of the few young people who rose to the podium during the Sámi Parliament’s plenum in Ubmeje.

But then not as a member of the Sámi Parliament – but as part of the audience during the public’s question period. She has chosen to get involved in local politics in the Social Democrats instead of in one of the parties in the Sami Parliament.

– I know that in Swedish politics I get more space for Sami issues, she tells SVT Sápmi.

At the same time, the Sami Parliament parties are struggling to attract more young people to get involved in Sápmi’s highest decision-making body. Erika Jannok, deputy in the Samiland Party, nevertheless sees great advantages in the fact that she, as a young person, has chosen to get involved in the Sami Parliament.

– If you’re not sitting here, you don’t know how the discussions are going, she says.
