An American delegation visiting Taiwan has met with President Tsai Ing-Wen. China condemns the visit and calls on the US to take into account “the extreme complexity and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue”.

“China always resolutely opposes any form of official exchange between the authorities of the United States and Taiwan, and resolutely opposes US interference in Taiwan’s affairs,” said a State Department spokesperson.

The five-person delegation is led by Republican Mike Gallagher, who chairs the House China Committee.

Two years ago, a visit by Nancy Pelosi, then the speaker of the US House of Representatives, drew strong criticism from China, which began large-scale military exercises around the self-governing island, which China views as part of its territory.
