How long do I have to change my driving license

With the generalization of the dematerialized driving license, the pink cardboard version is experiencing its last hours. Deadline and online procedures.

The driving license continues to evolve and make headlines. After its dematerialization in France via the France Identity application, and the possibility of obtaining it from the age of 17, the government is now considering the implementation of a compulsory medical examination to keep it. This bill, soon to be debated in the European Parliament, aims to check the ability of drivers to drive every fifteen years. But this measure should not be applied before 2027.

Another measure concerning the driving license should bring some changes for the French who still hold its version in pink cardboard and folding paper, in three panels. Indeed, the driving license as you knew it well before the 2000s will soon become part of the relics of history. Since its official establishment in 1922, to replace its ancestor the certificate of competence, it has evolved many times. This time it is replaced by a format “credit card” which has been issued to new motorists since 2013 and which is intended to be more secure. Before that, the two versions coexisted without problem until the legislator decided on an end date of validity of the pink permit.

So you will have understood, if you are one of those people who still have their pink card license, you will have to part with it and replace it. The request can now be made online, on the website of the National Agency for Secure Titles (ANTS) by preparing certain supporting documents (a copy of an identity document, proof of address, a digital photo signature and according to the cases of the Cerfa medical opinion form n°14880). The procedure is called: “Request online the replacement of the 3-fold ‘pink cardboard’ folding driving license”. It is completely free, except for photo ID fees. As for the date to change your old driving license: you have until January 19, 2033, which leaves you a little less than 10 years to do so. And if you happen to ask yourself the question, no one can escape it!
