The European Commission opens an investigation against Tiktok regarding alleged crimes against the protection of children and young people. This is what Thierry Breton, EU commissioner for the internal market, writes in a post on X.

More specifically, according to the Bloomberg news agency, Tiktok is lacking when it comes to things like addictive design, screen time and age verification. This under the digital law DSA (Digital services act). Platform X is also subject to investigation, citing the same law.

If the EU finds Tiktok guilty, the penalty could be a fine equivalent to six percent of the company’s global profit.

The EU and Tiktok have been on a collision course before, most recently Tiktok thought that the fee the company had to pay to be covered by the DSA was too high.

According to Bloomberg, a Tiktok spokesperson says the company “looks forward to explaining the work it does to protect young people” to the European Commission.
