Anyone who stays up late today can catch up on one of the German-language highlights of the last few years of cinema. Mr. Bachmann and his class collected prizes and were critically acclaimed. The epic 217 minutes of running time of today’s TV tip fly by.

Today’s TV tip delves into the everyday lives of two school classes

Maria Speth’s documentation accompanies everyday life in two classes at a comprehensive school in central Hesse. Their students have a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and native languages. Your guide is the teacher Dieter Bachmann. He treats the 12 to 14 year olds with openness and a range of creative teaching methods. First and foremost is the music that runs through the film, as well as Bachmann’s undiluted enthusiasm for his calling.

Mr. Bachmann and his class celebrated its premiere at the Berlinale in 2021. It was awarded the Jury Prize of the international competition and was one of the most celebrated films of the festival year. In the Moviepilot community it has an unusually high (for a German film) average rating of 7.7 points.

Moviepilot editor Matthias Hopf was equally enthusiastic and wrote about Mr. Bachmann and his class:

In long, quiet shots we observe the lesson and get to know the individual students and their teacher. […] In fact, the documentary very cleverly imitates what characterizes Bachmann as a teacher: being admirable empathy. The result is touching and inspiring. […]
There is no superficially encouraging wisdom here that you can achieve anything in life if you just want to. Instead, the film impresses with the classifying and empathetic view of someone who completely gets involved with the adolescents.
